ACON response to media reports on review into religious freedom

ACON is aware of recent media reports indicating the Australian Government, as a result of a review into religious freedom, will consider recommendations that would enshrine the right for schools to discriminate against LGBT students and teachers in the Sex Discrimination Act.

While we await further details of the content of the review, it is ACON’s long-held view that discriminating against LGBT students and teachers, by denying them equal access and opportunities to education and teaching, contributes to a range of health inequalities experienced by LGBT people such as higher rates of anxiety, depression and other mental health issues.

Introducing new laws across Australia allowing discrimination against LGBT people will make the lives of vulnerable people harder.

In 2017 Australia voted overwhelmingly in support of marriage equality. This historic vote was for fairness and equality for all. The proposed laws are not what people want in a fair and inclusive Australia.
